Translation and education

Viesti Kirjoittaja Lynette1 » 17.03.2024 20:10

I am trying to translate what is written here about Erik Eriksson Anttila’s children Anna Lisa and Johan and their religious education (middle of the left page). The handwriting is very difficult to read so I am only able to discern bits and pieces such as “by heart” and “school”. I have tried to guess what some of the letters are but it’s too illegible to translate.
Any help translating it would be most appreciated.

Also, are there any Finnish articles that describe what the education would have been in a farming village such as Lappajärvi in the 1850s - 1880s? I am wondering what type of education my great-grandparents would have received.

Thank you,
Lynette

A short translation:

On March 5th 'Höykkilä Gingerlag' [the Kinkerikunta of Höykkilä] was put through an examination at the place of peasant Johan Eriksson Lillhök.
Among the children, following weak readers were observed:
Peasant's son Jakob Johansson Storhök, born 48, cannot yet spell,
Peasant's son Johan Simonsson Storhök, born 47, likewise,
Peasant's son Carl Mattsson Storhök, born 47, very weak,
Peasant Gustaf Mattsson Storhök's child Abraham, born 46, completely weak,
Peasant Matts Thomasson Storhök's child Jakob, born 45, weak in reading [aloud/from the book] and by heart.
Peasant Erik Eriksson Antila's children Anna Lisa, born 46, insufficient reading [aloud] and by heart along with brother Johan, born 4? [?], similar.
Must inevitably find schoolmaster to Storhök, and the children of Lillhök and Anttila also need the very same.
The same person as last year took upon himself to keep school for children.
Next year the test will be held at the place of peasant Simon Henriksson Lillhök.

Birgit,

Thank you so much for translating that for me. That was a lot to translate so thank you for taking the time to do that.
